EVD-Enhanced video Disc is like a phoenix rising from the ashes. It would revolutionise HD Delivery .Thats what china would have you to believe!
Chinese manufacturers are sick of paying intellectual property royalities for most of the DVD plays they manufacture ,which is about 80 % of the world’d total. Now EVD china’s home grown format-was being pushed before as an alternative to HD-DVD and Blu -Ray.
Technically ,EVD is not a blue –laser technology like HD-DVD or Blu-ray;It’s a red laser like DVD and is touted to be its successor.China plans to phase out DVD altogether by 2008.EVD is essentially DVD that uses a more efficient compression system. But EVD’s developers have said in the past that they would try and merge the format with London based New Medium Enterprices VMD(Versatile Multi-Layer Disc),a red laser system offering 50 GB on ten 5 GB data layers.Analysts though say that more than two layers would be difficult.
There are some positives for Indians in this case.
1. The EVD players are already out.
2. The players are cheap(below $100)
3. They will in all probability be targeted at Indian audience.

Previously also china tried peddling the world before like S-VCD,its telecommunication standard TD-SCMA and WAPI,but they failed to leave a mark. This time around EVD might just make it!!
