3G is the shortform for Third Generation Mobile telephony services .3G represents the next step in the evolution of mobile telephony offering markedly greater capacity and efficiency than the current 2G systems .

3G supports high speed data of at least 144 kbps enabling broadband internet access on the mobile and features like mobile TV and converged communication services .3G will also allow the operators to enhance their capacities for voice traffic as well .

Using 3G services users can have broadband internet access ,interactive gaming ,download movies ,video clips and music .They can also enjoy other multimedia features such as video conferencing , mobile TV etc. For example a user will be able to download a 3 minute song in 15 secs with 3G which requires 8 minutes usually with current mobile technology .3G would enable video broadcast and data intensive services such as stock transactions , e learning and telemedicine through wireless communication.

Technically, the main difference between 3G and 2G networks is how quickly data can be sent and received. 3G networks can send data up to 40 times the rates of earlier digital networks, which means that in addition to audio, graphics and text, 3G customers can also send and receive video content, in 3G coverage areas. They provide service at 5-10 Mb per second.

With all these impressive features also comes also the price . In many countries subscribers saw a 50 % increase in their phone bills when they switched from normal 2G to 3G services .Also many consumers need to upgrade their hansdsets to avail 3G services .The starting price for a 3G - enabled handset is about Rs 6000 .In India a 3G start up package could cost users around Rs 299 .This may jack up for unlimited downloading which may cost between Rs 500 to Rs 1000.
