The IBM India Research Laboratory (IRL) in Bangalore is one of the eight facilities around the world where innovation , research and development of software and solutions for businesses take place.
The increasing need for sophisticated surveillance systems and the move to digital surveillance infrastructure has transformed surveillance into a large scale data analysis and management challenge. Smart surveillance systems use automatic image understanding techniques to extract information from the surveillance data.
The IBM Smart Surveillance Systems demonstrates the capabilities of a fully integrated smart surveillance system, where the index data generated by the analytics is made searchable in real time.
IBM has developed a smart surveillance system which incorporates intelligent alerts with smart search algorithm.With its smart search feature the operator can store view feeds from multiple CCTV's and conduct a search based on size , speed and even time.
There are many fields in which their surveillance system will come in handy.This includes the retail environment, where in the store owner can monitor the behaviour of the customers and can do detective work on shop lifting incidents.
Other areas exist such as traffic congestion, where employees can track vehicles and check for any infractions of rules and regulations.
a new feature, Traffic Prediction analyzes current traffic condition, and also has the ability to predict future traffic trends, using various input including the number of vehicles on the road , the speed of the vehicles and the historical trends.
Another area where this would prove useful is surveillance of public areas by government agencies for suspicious activity.
